The implosions on Wall Street over the past few days have left many of us wondering just which institutions we can trust. My friends at several large investment firms are hunkering down beneath desks and in bathroom stalls, waiting for the next (final?) shoe to drop. Eight-digit year-end bonuses will be among the casualties, as will the many talented people who find themselves looking for work in unsteady times.

Mistakes and outright greed have led some financial companies to the brink of extinction. It’s easy to see now that when you loan money to someone who can’t pay you back, the consequences will be dire. So how do you take the painful lessons being learned this week and apply them to your own business?

• Watch where you spend your money. Is the return you’re expecting from a product or service attainable or inflated? Spend to grow your business, not to maintain it.
• Examine risk you’re taking now. What’s the worst case scenario? Develop strategies that will enable you to thrive in good times and survive in rough times.
• Pursue development that will insulate you in bad times.
• Identify what sets you apart from your competition and why your services are absolutely necessary in hard times.

Apply these tips during rough seas, and the waters will be much calmer in the voyage ahead.
