Here's an excerpt from my
upcoming book 89 Seconds to Sales Success.
Enjoy!
Ever been in a
conversation and notice that the person you’re
speaking with isn’t looking at you? My wife has
learned not to seat herself in a sports bar
where I can see a television beyond her
shoulder. I’ve tried to convince her that I can
carry on a deep, meaningful conversation with
her while simultaneously focusing on a baseball
game. She’s not buying that line and frankly, I
can’t sell it either.
We’ve all been the
victim of this visual multi-tasking, and we’ve
all been perpetrators as well. Giving a person
your undivided attention is one of the few
precious gifts left to give these days. When
you’re focused on one individual and their
needs, you’re telling them that you care
sincerely about what they have to say, and
you’re demonstrating respect. Think of a time
when you weren’t focused solely on the person
you were interacting with. Where were your eyes?
What was drawing your mind away from the
present? How did that feel and appear to the
person you were speaking with? How would you
have felt in their shoes?
Make a commitment
in each interaction you have to stay in the
moment and focus intently on the other person.
Listen with your eyes, ears and body language.
