No holiday gets our family more excited than Halloween. Okay, half the family. My wife Terry and I are mildly enthusiastic about the annual orgy of sweets and costumes. Our two sons Nick (age eight) and Chris (age 7) fall somewhere between enthusiastic and head over heels in love. For the boys, the Halloween season starts November 1^st and lasts until the following October 31. In short, there is no off season.

What do you get excited about? Really excited, with all the passion and joy that a child can muster for their favorite holiday? Perhaps it’s your work that drives you to periods of delirious bliss. Maybe a hobby does the trick; like fly fishing, reading biographies, or playing a musical instrument. I know no rapture like the one I feel when I’m standing amidst a trout stream, up to my ears in billowing insects and intelligent fish. While the fish win every time, the feel of the water around my legs and the joy of being outdoors more than makes up for an empty creel.

Here’s a challenge that is worth taking any time you feel like the gap between your passion and the life you’re living is widening. Write down five activities that you can enjoy within fifty miles of where you live. Match each activity up with a specific block of time in the coming month. Next to each activity, write down three emotions you relate to what you’ll be doing. Then, as the Nike ad says, just do it.

Connecting with what gives you pure pleasure makes life something to cherish. The worst day feeding your passion beats the best day of drudgery.
