Going for the Gold
A
client called for a coaching session the other day.
He lives in the U.K., which is not unusual, but he
called from “the road”; Ulan Baatar, Mongolia. “Joe”
is there to help the country of Mongolia modernize
their electrical and utility systems and to help
bring this poor, third-world country into the 21st
century.
All the things we take for granted, like lights, hot
water, and reliable transit are luxuries in
Mongolia. And yet a walk through the unpaved streets
upon his arrival the other day reminded Joe of how
much we are truly all alike. The streets were
flooded with joyful smiles, hugs and handshakes
shared with total strangers.
Why the commotion and celebration in this land many
of us would call backward and under-developed?
Mongolia’s athletes had returned home with a record
haul of Olympic medals from the games in Beijing,
including the first gold medals in the nation’s
history. While their 4 total medals was dwarfed by
giants like China, the US and Great Britain, the
modest triumphs by world standards were monumental
in this small country.
How often do we measure our own success against
those of others? When I swim laps in the local pool,
I don’t compare my times against those of Michael
Phelps or Dara Torres. Yet I revel in the joy that
competing against myself brings and in the
recognition of a satisfying workout. What can you do
today to celebrate your successes? Maybe you’ve just
cleaned your desk, or bought flowers for a friend,
or sincerely thanked a co-worker. You won’t get a
gold medal for those efforts, but they deserve
recognition from your cheering crowds nonetheless.
Today, be your own cheering crowd!
