The Lesson of the Check-Out Line
There I was, with a basket full of goodies at the
supermarket. 12 goodies, to be precise, and in the
“10 Items or Less” line! Standing both behind and in
front of people with sharper math skills and a
measure of civility, I grunted as if to myself and
exclaimed that I’d “forgotten something”; a ruse to
dump the extra two jars of peanut butter in the
frozen food section. That way, I could come back to
the “10 Items or Less” line with a clear conscience.
Fast forward three minutes, and the line has now
grown. Actually, it looks like the line at a gas
station advertising “1970” prices. Moving just as
rapidly. In front of me now, two fellows speaking in
a foreign language (Russian? Ukranian? East Texan?)
who apparently want to corner the market on fat-free
yogurt. They’re buying a mountain of yogurt, at
least 100 of the little plastic tins. Yes, we’re
still in the “10 Items or Less” line. I glance to
the left, and the “full cart” line has been taken
over by teens shopping for a camping trip. They’re
shopping on a budget and trying to replace every
brand-name item in their cart with generics. One at
a time. Paying by check.
If I had hair, I’d have torn it out. Instead, I
wondered about the deeper lesson. Is it that the
line you’re in is always the slowest? Perhaps
that adult-hood presumes maturity? I think the
lesson is that patience, more than a virtue, has to
become a way of life. Technology gives us the
opportunity to speed life up, but nothing can
eliminate human error or selfishness. You can only
police yourself.
