Get More Done with Less Multi-Tasking!

Multi-tasking is the bane of any leader’s existence. More headaches are created by trying to do too much in too little time, than are created by compensation plan revisions and vacation planning put together. Grab a blank sheet of paper and list the five, or ten things, you think you’re focused on right now. Now review those items, and on a scale of 1-10, 1 being genesis and 10 being completion, grade where you are on each item.

If you listed 10 items and scored yourself at 100, congratulations. If you’re like the rest of us, and see 4’s, 3’s, 7’s and 1’s scattered about, it’s time to take control. Write down one action you can take to move a 4 to a 5, a 7 to an 8, or a 1 to a 2. Do this each day, for three items only. Trying to tackle the entire list each day is like trying to win the Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot-Dog eating contest. Too much of a good thing can leave you feeling very sick.

Revisit your list every other day, and grade on the 1-10 scale. Add items to the list, drop some items off. If one task is stuck on one grade for more than two weeks, it’s time to drop it off the list!
