Keeping it All in Perspective
Ever see those photos of World War I battle sites?
The trenches where young men fought all over Europe
were muddy, rat-infested and typically not a place
you’d want to spend any more time in than absolutely
necessary. Kind of like what our back yard looks
like currently, without the rats and doughboys. One
major sewer line later, and the local plumbing
company will be sending their kids to college on
what we’ve spent on repairs, this year alone.
Life crops up like that sometimes, doesn’t it? Just
when your fiscal picture is looking rosy, an
unanticipated expense comes along. Your personal
life is running smoothly, then a loved one drops a
bombshell. The lawnmower is repaired, and then the
car needs new tires.
Perspective can be a valuable commodity when life
starts throwing curveballs your way. Some get that
from coaching, others from spiritual guidance or
self-help books. The key is to remember that while
many challenges are out of our control, our reaction
to those challenges is always within our command. Do
current gas prices tick you off? Be glad you don’t
live in Holland, where they pay the equivalent of
$10.50 a gallon. Water heater spring a leak? Relax,
machines can always be fixed.
Reserve your strongest ire for true injustice. Don’t
sweat the small stuff. Small stuff can be defined as
anything they won’t say about you in your eulogy.
