Beat the Heat
I
went for a walk late this morning, while the sun was
high and the pavement was hot. It reminded me of a
“Twilight Zone” episode from years ago. A band of
thieves make off with one million dollars in gold
bars. They park a truck loaded with the loot in a
Nevada cave, and plan to sleep for 100 years in
chambers that will preserve them exactly as they
are. 100 years go by, they wake up, and as the saga
unfolds three of the four thieves are killed by
their ringleader, out of spite, rage and deception.
Days later, the ringleader is found prostrate on a
steaming highway by passersby. He offers to trade
them a gold bar for water, then expires as the
couple driving by wonder at the oddity of his offer.
After all, in 2060, gold is worth next to nothing
since it can be produced artificially. The thief
died hanging on to something he thought dear, that
was worthless.
Okay, so it was a hot walk this morning. But as I
thought about that deluded criminal portrayed in the
drama, I couldn’t help think about the power of what
we hold on to. Like those worthless gold bars, each
of us holds fast to an image of ourselves, habits,
work practices, or beliefs about the world, that no
longer have any value. What do you believe or do
that no longer serves you? Take a minute to examine
any maxims that you accept unthinkingly about
yourself. “I can’t speak in front of groups” “I’m a
terrible spouse” “I always mess up on the job” “I’m
doing everything I can to make this work”
How do those beliefs serve you, or disserve you
today? What can you do, right now, to change your
perspective?
