I’m not sure if the phone was staring at me, or if I was staring at the phone. Nevertheless, the “big call” I had to make was to a meeting planner I’d never met before, someone who needs my services as a speaker. Not only does she need those services, she’s willing to pay for them. So why did I have such trouble picking up the phone to call her?

Ever experience “phonetrepaphobia”? That’s my self-coined phrase for the fear of making call that could likely end in rejection. Or a call that could end in acceptance and a richer experience for each person on the line! This call to “Kim” (not her real name) had been lingering on my task list for the better part of a week. Each time I had time to make the call, I created something else to do that wouldn’t result in what I perceived to be a value judgment about me. Sound familiar? What’s the call you’re putting off, and why?

Here’s a news flash. Business doesn’t happen without contact. A great web site, flashy stationery and an ad campaign can only do so much. Unless people get to know you, the chances of initial (or repeat) business are remote. Kim has no opportunity to make an intelligent decision about the value of my services to her constituents until we connect. Simple as that. My phonetrepaphobia had no basis in fact, just in my own fear.
