Mike buys a Rolls Royce!

Normally I don’t pay much attention to dreams, but I had one the other night that seemed to have deeper meaning. Either that, or it’s time to buy a new car.

I dreamt that the Rolls Royce Motor Car Company came out with a pickup truck. Yes, the company that has brought you fabled legends like the Phantom and Silver Shadow now has a workhorse for the rancher set. And I bought the first one off the production line. Or so I dreamed. I don’t recall much of the dream, other than that my wife Terry was quite displeased that I’d spent all that money ($160,000; odd what we remember, isn’t it?) on a truck.

Family harmony aside, what struck me about that dream later was how some companies and individuals move away from what makes them great. Rolls Royce making a pickup truck makes as much sense as McDonalds re-branding as an exquisite dining experience. Yet going away from our strengths is something we do all the time, especially in the guise of “diversifying” or “branching out”.

Where is your personal brand strongest? Are you a great speaker, mortgage broker or human resources professional? How do you ensure that you spend as much time professionally and personally doing the things that people know you best for and that bring you the most fulfillment? I’m not against stretching beyond your comfort zone; goodness knows any entrepreneur has to leave their comfort zone far behind in order to succeed.

Identify the most valuable things you do. Write them down on a piece of paper, and place a “star” next to the skills and characteristics that make you an expert. Grow your skills and knowledge in your field, and look for ways to stretch in areas related to your greatest passion.
