Get off the Wheel!

It's interesting what you learn while reading the newspaper these days. Amidst the election year punditry and news of far-off strife was a salute to the recently departed William F. Buckley. Politics aside, it turns out Buckley was a peanut butter aficionado. So much so, that he kept a pantry fully stocked of his favorite brand, and would send jars and cases of the gooey mix to friends and colleagues.

What are you passionate about? What would you share with the world if you could? For a speaker like me, it's my message about the impact of our stories and experience on the subject of leadership. In my role as a coach, that passion centers on how each of us decides our own fate. Success lies in our hands, as does love, frustration, decisiveness and happiness. I can't send a jar (or a case) of my vision to everyone, so I find outlets like this newsletter, my speaking engagements and coaching sessions to share my passion.

Work can feel like a dead end from time to time. You deal with the same problems, concerns, criticisms and personalities on a daily basis. Sometimes it feels like life is a big wheel, and we're all hamsters.

To shake that feeling, and get your momentum moving in a direction that's truly rewarding, start integrating your work and your passion together. If you love teaching, find someone to mentor. If you like speaking, start lunch & learn sessions at your workplace and volunteer to be the first host. Share an inspirational book with co-workers and meet once a month to discuss how you're integrating what you read into what you do.

Do those ideas sound uncomfortable? Maybe they've been tried before where you work and they didn't pan out? Good! Momentum comes from pain, the pain you feel when you're stuck on that hamster wheel and you're tired of feeling uninspired. Remember Peter Finch in the movie "Network"? Stand up, open the window, and shout "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!" Then listen.
