Hi-Tech or Low-Tech, Make Your Message Stand Out!
My sophomore year in college began in the fall of
1979. Having a year under my belt meant I felt
comfortable in the surroundings, and could begin to
share the benefit of my experience and wisdom with
incoming freshmen. More to the point, I was more
concerned with sharing my intellect with incoming
fresh-women. Anyway, I knew it all.
Part of the allure as a self-imagined “Big Man on
Campus” was the high tech attraction of my dorm
room. Not only did my roommate Sheldon and I have a
phone, we also had “Pong”. Remember “Pong”? A little
electronic blip would move slowly back and forth
across the television screen, and players controlled
“paddles” that would bat the blip back and forth.
Before the creators of “Guitar Hero” and “Madden
2008” were gleams in their mother’s eyes, Pong
ruled.
Technology moves forward, and my kids would roll
their eyes at Pong today. There’s a place in
business communication for simplicity and
time-honored practices, and a place when you have to
get “21st Century” to really communicate.
-
When you have to get your message across in a
quick and compelling manner, stay simple. A
handshake, smile and a legal pad can do wonders
if you’re concise in their use.
-
When the message is multi-tiered or you know
your audience expects a high-tech presentation,
make use of colors, graphs, bullet points and
interactive experiences.
In both instances, secure your uniqueness and make
yourself memorable by telling stories that show why
your message is so important, and why your audience
should take action.
