Tis the Season (Part Two)

Selfishly, I wanted that acknowledgement from an
appreciative family. It was also important to know
what had happened. Donating a gift like this
blindly, with the real chance that closure might
never come, seemed too much to bear.
Then we watched the towers fall. Out of that clear
September sky, when so many lives were changed and
so many dreams torn asunder. In the ashes of that
day, we realized how truly valuable the gift of life
is. To withhold, or to give? Not a question for
debate anymore. We signed the paperwork to give our
embryos away, understanding that the season of
giving didn’t need recognition or a thank you card
after all.
In the present, we have a connection with a family a
world away that is almost unique. Turns out, the
adopting family not only wanted to thank us, but
wanted us in their lives! Only a few donor and
adoptee families ever make contact, and fewer still
maintain a relationship that lasts beyond a few
months. Our new friends and their daughter (big
brown eyes!) Noelle make their current home in the
United Kingdom, on assignment with the US military.
The challenge of gift-giving is greater than which
version of a Game Boy or X-Box to choose. It isn’t
which luxury car to bestow on an already over-gifted
loved one. The true challenge is to give a piece of
yourself to someone with no expectation of return.
