The Ice Cream Paradox

While visiting a client recently, I stopped by the company lunchroom to re-fill a water bottle. A woman walked in, smiled and said hello, and opened the refrigerator. “Lunchtime, eh?” I said (another chapter in my life as a brilliant conversationalist!) and she nodded while pulling out a Lean Cuisine© frozen meal. She also pulled out a pint of Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream.

Do you ever find yourself acting in ways contrary to your best interests? Sometimes doing the wrong thing when you know you should be doing the right thing? Eating a diet meal for lunch with heavenly high-fat ice cream for dessert sounds like one of those paradoxes.

Moving ahead in the pursuit of life’s goals is hard enough; tougher still when you’re rowing two oars in opposite directions. Try this simple test the next time a temptation threatens to lead you away from your objectives.

  1. Will this help me reach my goal?
  2. How must my approach change to eliminate temptation?
  3. What can I do, say or think to steer back to the path that is most productive?

Celebrate the times when you use questions like these to focus yourself on what’s most important. These are also great questions to ask in a group setting at work. Replace the singular “me” with the plural “we”, and see how your team moves into highly productive discussion.
