The latest affliction in Colorado and surrounding states is something called “Rockies Fever.” It’s a new disease, one the region isn’t sure how to cope with, given that the local baseball nine is making their first appearance in baseball’s World Series. After spending three unsuccessful hours online in the past several days trying to get tickets for one of the games against my beloved Boston Red Sox, the fever is only stronger.

How to live in a house divided? My wife Terry seems ambivalent regarding the match-up, though she’s leaning toward the Rockies. Nick and Chris, our two sons, are strongly in the Rockies’ camp, reminding me constantly that the “Red Sox stink.” Nice kids.

Different opinions and interests can bring people together, or widen a gap. Looking for common interests and experiences in your circle of friends and colleagues enables you to build bridges where none are readily apparent. That’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about the power of stories in business and personal life.

A great story reminds people that while our rooting interests, native culture or religious customs may vary, we all share some measure of common background. Parents relate to watching a child struggle or succeed. Salespeople grin when asked to recount a particularly difficult client or prospect. We all relate to being the underdog at some point in our lives. When you’re “stuck” in an interaction and can’t find that common ground, start asking questions and be ready to open up with your own stories!
