Promoting Yourself by Promoting Others

A former employee from many years ago would walk into my office about twice a month, to complain “my career is stuck in the slow lane!” I’d sympathize, and ask him what he was currently doing to promote himself and his value within the organization. “Nothing. I wasn’t raised to ‘toot my own horn.’”

Sometimes we’re the only ones who will toot the horn for ourselves. Selfish promotion gets you nowhere, and sitting in the back of the room waiting for someone to notice your brilliance may not get you much further. So where is the fine line between career bragging and career flagging?

I don’t know. How’s that for honesty?

What I do know is that my career really started taking off when I began tooting the horns of others. At a networking meeting recently I stood up to acknowledge some clients in the audience. Rather than talk about the work we’d done together to build their confidence and value, I talked about what I’d learned from them in the process. People didn’t shower me with money afterward, but I know that several in the audience will follow my lead. Praise can do amazing things, especially when it’s public, and when it’s sincere.

Before you worry about promoting yourself, start promoting others. Chances are, you won’t have to promote yourself after that, because the others will do it for you!
