One Step Back, Two Steps Forward
Heard an inspiring quote recently, passed along by
my friend Dana over lunch. It struck a chord for me,
specifically with regard to how we apply new
learning in every-day life.
The further
backward you can look, the farther forward you can
see.
How do you capture the lessons of your past, and
apply them to the present and future? Writing in a
diary or journal can help secure knowledge. Studies
show that we remember less than 15% of what we hear,
though that number jumps to almost 80% of what we
write down. The issue for many busy professionals is
that they (okay, “We”) write those items down on
scraps of paper or Post-It© notes. Ever try to find
one of those inspiring bits a day, week or month
later?
Keep a repository of inspiration for yourself. At my
desk, I have inspiration and lessons posted on the
walls, along with a separate file entitled
“Inspiration”. When I’m stuck for a newsletter
subject, I head to the walls or that file folder,
and am rewarded consistently with gems.
Reflection on the past doesn’t have to take place on
a mountain-top, and you don’t need a guru. Just a
really great memory, or a really great filing
system. That, and the ability to look backward, and
forward.
