A More Memorable You

What’s the most effective way to make yourself memorable? Deeds that last beyond a lifetime are one way, like George Washington and his cherry tree. You can also donate vast sums of money to an alma mater or institution that you’ve valued through the years. Then the grateful masses name a building, stadium, or park bench after you. Until the next donation comes along that is. Then you’re replaced by someone who had the good fortune to outlive you, and the fortune to out-gift you.

I like to think that our stories are what make us memorable. In commerce it’s not often easy to separate yourself from the pack. Take the mortgage-lending business. I’ve heard it said that nearly one out of 50 employed Americans can loan you money to purchase or mortgage your home. A recent Google search turned up 1.2 million mortgage brokers in the USA! The challenge in a competition pool that large is to stand out from the crowd.

A memorable story can make or break your business. Everyone offers “excellent service” and “competitive pricing.” What you offer that others can’t match is your experience, your expertise, and the stories behind how you became who you are. Follow the Three-Step Story Process to uncover the valuable stories in your past.

  • REFLECT Where and when in your past did you learn the universal truths of life?
  • CONNECT Why is that experience important today?
  • APPLY How can you help others learn from and leverage your expertise?
