Connect to Produce Results
You never know how powerful a connection will be, if
you never make it. Here’s a story about opportunity
knocking.
One June day in 2006 I headed downtown for a
networking lunch. A friend had asked me to come
speak to his group, and though the meeting size was
rather small, just a handful of folks, I accepted
his offer and the free lunch. Having inherited my
father’s penchant for arriving to events absurdly
early, I sat at the table alone and chatted with the
server while waiting for the others to arrive.
A
stranger poked his head into the room, and I asked
if he was here for the “networking event”. He said
yes, and then rattled off the name of a networking
group I’d never heard of. After introducing myself
and asking him some questions about his line of
work, I said “We’re not the folks you’re looking
for, but if they don’t show up, come join us!”
Several minutes later, “Chris” came back to the
table, pulled up a seat next to mine, and we got to
know each other even better. He heard me speak that
day and signed up for this newsletter. Today, almost
14 months after meeting, I received a referral from
Chris. If your job has you interacting with humans
(and I hope it does), there are several lessons
here.

Appoint yourself the “welcome committee” at any
event, you never know who you will meet.

Get curious! Ask questions about others and be
genuinely interested in their welfare.

Figure out how you can be of service to them,
and then do it.
