Getting to Know You…and Everyone!
When I speak with groups about networking, the
question of how to meet new people invariably comes
up. My response usually focuses on helping the
audience identify groups that share similar passions
and interests. If you’re an enthusiastic reader of
historical biographies, a local library can help you
find or start a discussion group of like-minded
individuals. If politics is a passion, then
volunteering at a local party headquarters can
introduce you to new people.
What I didn’t recognize until recently is that you
can create new relationships out of the most mundane
circumstances. Take today. I presented a one-hour
workshop for a group of case managers at a local
hospital. After the event, I took an elevator down
to the building’s first floor and walked to the
cafeteria. The trip would have normally taken 90
seconds. It took 5 minutes because:
·
I met a man wearing the same sport-coat as me and
complimented him on his taste. We joked about our
ages, and the ages of our sport-coats.
·
Asked a woman how she managed to get the sliding
glass doors so clean. Received a 2-minute lecture on
smudges, and the people who leave them.
·
Complimented a woman in the cafeteria who had
smeared peanut butter on her pancake, one of my
personal favorites!
Each of those interactions wouldn’t have happened if
I hadn’t taken the initiative to engage those around
me. Look for common traits or interests around you,
and egage!
