Living to Your Potential
Last night I co-hosted the annual June pledge drive
at Rocky Mountain Public Broadcasting television
here in Denver. I’ve been a pledge host for PBS for
24 years, in markets from Brownsville Texas, to San
Francisco, Albuquerque, and here in Colorado. The
work is tremendously rewarding, and it’s a great way
to help a good cause.
The final 60 seconds before a live TV program begins
are usually frantic with technicians running around
the studio, camera operators pointing at lenses,
“talent” fluffing hair or correcting makeup. It’s a
hectic scene, but last night was different. 15
people in the studio watched in silence as faces,
names and hometowns of fallen US soldiers flashed
across the screen at the end of The News Hour with
Jim Lehrer. You could have heard a pin drop.
My reaction to this was one of wonder, and sadness.
It’s amazing to me that life goes on for families
who will never see the faces of their loved ones
again. I don’t know if our fighting in Afghanistan
and Iraq is worth the toll, as a speaker and coach I
simply try to understand, not to analyze. In the
end, I can’t help wonder if one of those dead
soldiers, or a civilian casualty anywhere in the
world, might have been the person who, with a longer
life, may have cured cancer.
Our potential, and the potential of the people
around us, is in the end a sacred trust. When you
have the chance to influence a person enough to help
them live their dreams and live out their potential,
there is no greater reward.
