Feedback tips from Young and Old

It’s always been my contention that there is no such thing as “negative feedback”. All well-intentioned input on our performance should be welcome in our personal and professional lives. That said, it’s also easy to let our internal biases and perspectives color how we receive that feedback, and what we do with it.

What’s your first reaction when you’re on the receiving end of feedback at work? A lot depends on who’s providing the input, and what the circumstances are. When feedback consistently includes praise and reinforcement, it’s typically welcome and can be productively used to change behavior and performance. When input comes in the form of criticism without balance, it’s easy for the receiver to turn defensive or to try and deflect blame.

Strive for providing balanced feedback at home and in the workplace. Start with praise, continue with constructive criticism, and then always leave time to discuss next steps, and how you can support the receiver to make beneficial change.

Or, you can use my five-and-a-half year old son Chris as your feedback model. While I was changing shirts one day, he looked at my mid-section and exclaimed “Wow Dad! You need a bra for your tummy!”
