Memories can be Beautiful…and then
Hard to believe that Faber Communications LLC will
be celebrating our third year of business in the
fall. It seems like only yesterday that I embarked
upon this rewarding entrepreneurial journey.
I’d always thought I’d retire from my long-term
previous employer, with the traditional celebratory
dinner and a gold watch to mark my years of service.
Instead, my departure was abrupt, and without
ceremony. Unless boxing up 12 years of memories
under the watchful eye of a Human Resources rep
counts as ceremony!
Leaving any relationship can be daunting, and it’s
easy to look back and identify the things we wished
we had done at different stages in our personal or
professional lives. Georges Santayana said that if
we don’t remember the past, we are doomed to repeat
it. There are benefits to remembering the past, but
not for rehashing it. What “mistakes” from your own
past do you reflect upon today? Could you have
handled a stressful situation better, or said the
exact right words at the right time, instead of what
you said then?
Mistakes or missteps from long ago can acquire a
weight way out of proportion as time goes on. Too
often we’re quick to forgive others, but not nearly
as punctual when it comes to forgiving ourselves. If
there’s something from the past that’s weighing you
down as you attack the future, take a few minutes to
write your perceived transgression down on paper.
Look at it. Gaze at it. Ponder it. Crumple it up.
Throw the paper in the trash, along with your
regret, and move on. Life’s waiting for you.
